What is the impact of GST on farm equipment and agricultural inputs? Does it have a positive impact? Barani SK, Nolambur

Fertilisers are taxed at 5% under GST. This will have a positive impact in terms of reduced prices, as it was earlier taxed at 5-7% with the added cost in terms of non-availability of input credit to the Manufacturer. Under GST, Farm Equipment like tractors are taxed at 18%, which also would translate into lower prices to the farmer. Lubricants are taxed at 18% as against the current rate of 26-30%. GST would benefit the agro-sector. The benefit to farmers would have been more effective if the entire sector had been kept outside the purview of GST like Income Tax. This would have boosted investments, growth in the sector.
