GSL’s agreement with Germany’s MTU involves the transfer of the MTU technology related to local manufacture of the engine components, engine assembly, testing, painting and major overhauls of the MTU Series 8000 engines, which are fitted onboard all Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV).
Describing the agreement as a ‘game changer’, rear admiral (retd) Shekhar Mital, chairman and managing director of GSL, said that since the main diesel engines constitute the heart of a ship and are among the major high value imported equipment items on board the ship, the collaboration will aid to significantly increase the indigenous content on the ships made in the country.
“It will also provide a strategic edge to Indian Defence Sector as know-how and infrastructure for such niche technology will now be available with a PSU shipyard, for the utilisation of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard,” said Mital.
In addition, GSL has also inked a pact with French leader Naval Group to design and produce all shore based simulators for Scorpene Submarine project and other advanced simulator requirements of the Indian Navy.
The company has also collaborated with UK-based Griffon Hover Works to design, develop and produce hovercrafts in India to cater to defence needs. With this, India will become the first country to manufacture Hover’s hovercrafts outside the UK.
GSL signed a deal with a French organisation in the field of design and production of all shore based simulators for Scorpene class Submarine project and for other future advanced simulator requirements of the Indian Navy. Another deal was made with UK-based Griffon Hover Works for design, development and production of hovercrafts in India.
