Acclaimed director Gautham Vasudev Menon recently surprised everyone by revealing the first look poster of his web series, titled Queen, which is based on the life of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The poster featured Ramya Krishnan in a white saree with a black and red border. Though it garnered a lot of attention on social media, the announcement didn’t go down well with Jayalalithaa’s nephew Deepak Jayakumar who claimed that the filmmaker didn’t bother to seek his permission before making a web series on his aunt’s life.
Talking to DT Next, Deepak Jayakumar said, “I don’t understand who gave Gautham Menon the rights to make a web series on Amma. Any filmmaker would do some basic research before coming up with a biopic of sorts on iconic personalities. I am sure he hasn’t done as he didn’t even bother to meet me and inform me about this project. Just because a production house is paying him a huge amount, he can’t make a film or a series on anyone’s life without gathering authentic information. He will face serious consequences if the series gets released without my consent.” He adds, “I have no rights to stop him if he is making a film on her political life. But this series also touches upon her personal life, which is not fair.”
Ask him if he has any idea about other biopics on Jayalalithaa which are in the making, he said, “Director Vijay is making a biopic on her life with Kangana Ranaut. Even before making an official announcement regarding this project, Vijay told me that he is planning to make a film on Jayalalithaa and he needs my permission. He even said that he would make this film only if I give him a no-objection certificate. I immediately agreed and gave him all the details I am aware of. I think that’s how it should be done.” He adds, “Gautham Menon should first concentrate on his other directorial ventures, which are still facing financial issues.” When we tried to contact Gautham Menon to get his reaction on this, he wasn’t available for comment.
The web series will be streaming on OTT platform Mx Player and Gautham Menon has directed the first season which will have 11 episodes.
