Q and A: Chennai makes 12 L bicycle trips per day
Associated with the Chennai Smart City Limited (CSCL) in its transport-related projects, Nashwa Naushad, Associate, Urban Development, Institute of Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), predicts the six per cent of all the trips in Chennai would be made on bicycle every day. The ITDP is the transportation consultant of the CSCL.

What will be the benefit of the bicycle-sharing in Chennai?
The long-awaited bicycle sharing system has been launched and initiated by the Greater Chennai Corporation under Smart City Mission in Chennai with 250 bicycles across 25 stations in Anna Nagar and Marina. The introduction of the system looks to provide residents with affordable, healthy, and sustainable mobility alternatives to meet travel demands.
What is bicycling scenario in the city?
Bicycling makes for almost a tenth of urban trips in India, which is as many as trips made using cars. Observing data from the Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Study done in 2010 and Census figures of 2011 along with current trends, 6 per cent of all trips in Chennai are estimated to be made on bicycle every day, which is approximately 12 lakh bicycle trips per day.
How do the city residents respond?
Bicycle-sharing system will enhance last-mile connectivity in the city. The launch is fetching a positive response from the citizens. The system will be expanded with 5,000 bicycles in 380 stations across the city and this would ensure even greater usage and success. This would also complement the existing public transport system.
