Citizen Connect: Debris on busy street in Kilpauk causes trouble for commuters and shop owners

 Dust and stones left behind after various construction projects on Dharmaraja Kovil Street are causing distress to the public who frequent the area.

A part of Halls Road in Kilpauk has an undone pavement with debris dumped near it.

Meanwhile, Dharmaraja Kovil Street that connects Halls Road with Kilpauk Garden Road has even more debris mixed with garbage dumped on its side. 

As the junction between the Halls Road and the street is crowded during peak hours, the debris is causing commuters a lot of hassle. Sharmila, who picks her daughters up from tuition on her scooter and takes the street to reach her house in Purasaiwalkam, said, “It’s already difficult to turn into the narrow street from the main road. And now, the dust goes into my eyes and it’s risky because bike clashes can easily happen in the junction.”

Viswanathan, working at Girija Tailoring on the street, said, “It has been months since the debris was dropped from a nearby site that was demolished. Neither the people responsible or the Greater Chennai Corporation have bothered to clear it. All of it flies into the shop and the clothes given by customers get covered in dust.”

Srivaris Stationery is another shop adjacent to the tailoring shop. Punitha, who works there, said, “Besides clearing the debris, even a public dustbin has to be placed here as residents drop their garbage here. The conservancy staff do not clean it and it just remains there on the roadside.” DT Next’s attempt to call zone II office went unanswered.
