I could only study up to Class 8. I started doing small jobs after i dropped out of school. Now, I work in a cottage industry making panneer soda (aerated drink). I have been supplying soda bottles for nearly 30 years to the shops in Purasawalkam, Periamet and nearby areas. The manufacturer pays 30 per cent of the sales amount as a commission to me. I live in Choolaimedu and start the day at 7.30 am every day. I supply new bottles to the shops and collect old bottles. I have never regretted dropping out of the school as the Almighty has given me the opportunity to work and earn. As of now, I earn more than Rs 300 per day. I am lucky that I am able to work. My son has written Class 10 public examination and is waiting for the results. I will educate him and provide a better chance at life. In the past 30 years, I have witnessed the fall of the cottage industry making panneer soda. Nearly 30 years ago, the business was good. Now, due to the influx of foreign soft drink companies, this industry is waning. I am now busy as the demand has slightly increased due to the summer season. During winter and monsoon seasons, we will have very low sales.
