Slice Of Life: ‘I want rural Tamil Nadu to develop as Chennai has'
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I came to Chennai from Thoothukudi in search of employment 10 years ago and started working in a tea shop as a cleaner in Saidapet. I have studied only till Class 10 and then started doing odd jobs at small restaurants. I used to observe the tea master there and now I took up the same job. I came to Ekkatuthangal and started working as a tea master. I earn Rs 500 per day and I am happy with my job. I have three sisters, my wife and our newborn daughter in the family. They stay in my native town. I visit them during festivals. However, I send money to my family every month to support them. The money I make is better in Chennai and that is why I decided to stay away from my family. I plan to bring them to the city because I want my daughter to study in a good school here. I like Chennai as it is more developed and there are better employment opportunities here. The city has advanced over the last 10 years I have stayed here and I wish that developments take place at the same pace even in the rural parts of the State.
