Little wonder then that the bin is overflowing and the waste is littered all around it. Their troubles could be solved by just placing adequate number of bins in the neighbourhood, but that has not happened despite repeated complaints, said residents here.

The lack of enough waste bins has remained a long pending woe of the people here, who point out that it could easily be termed as the most unclean locality in the area. For the families here, numbering more than 80 families, there is only one bin that is placed at the end of the road. Making matters worse, the neighbouring streets, too, do not have dustbins, forcing the residents there to dump waste near the bin on Balaraman Rao Street.

“There are many stray animals that roam around littering the waste as most of it is thrown out of the dustbins. The issue has been brought to the attention of the corporation workers but nothing has been done yet. The area is in need of more dustbins,” says V Chandrasekhar,a resident.

According to some of the residents, the situation has reached this stage because some of the bins were removed from here. They have been demanding for more bins since then, but the repeated appeals have met with little success.

“Though conservancy workers clean the garbage every day, the bin is filled in the morning hours itself. Because of this, the area surrounding it is littered with garbage throughout the day,” said Sana Khan, another resident of BalaramanRao Street.

What worries the people here is that the littered waste not only leads to unclean surroundings, but also increases the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue andchikungunya.

“The foul odour irks the residents and commuters, and also reduces walking space for pedestrians. Authorities consider lack of dustbins to be a minor civic issue and is therefore ignoring it. Thus this issue has not been resolved for such a long time,” said Sai Prasad, yet another resident of the locality.

When contacted, the Greater Chennai Corporation officials from Adyar Zone said that they would soon place more garbage bins in the area.
