I have been working in multiple hospitals since I finished MBBS and I am planning to pursue higher studies because I want to be a cardio-thoracic surgeon. After I completed my tenure at a city hospital recently, I felt I should do something for the wonderful nurses who work tirelessly day and night. I bought each of them a bag of chocolates and wrote personalised notes. I have a soft corner for nurses because they do all the hard work but the credit goes to doctors. This was just a small gesture to say thank you. I developed an individual relationship with all the staff at the hospital. One of them is a divorced single mother. So I wrote that she will be a great mom and her son is lucky to have her. They least expected I would give it to them, so they were thrilled. I think doctors are like the brain of a hospital, but nurses do the role of all the other organs. From taking care of the patients to being at their side, giving them the correct medication, inserting the IV line for fluids, seeing if there is any reaction and reporting it to the doctors, they are the ones who do most of the work. I feel that for a job that requires so much knowledge and skill, and for all their efforts, they are not compensated enough financially or in terms of the importance given. In fact, they earn 1/10th of what we do, and I am hoping this changes soon.
