Two different cultures but the same poetry. The three Leçons de ténèbres (Lessons of Darkness) by François Couperin celebrated the death of Christ through poetry at a mesmerising evening at the Rukmini Arangam in the Kalakshetra Foundation, Besant Nagar. The night also paid musical homage to northern and southern India, where it took the form of the ragas of darkness.
The works of Louis XIV’s composer were interspersed with ragas from the Indian repertoire. The music from the flute alternated with high baroque voices in a dialogue. The event was organised by the Alliance Française of Madras and Institut Français in India.
