Tamil Nadu Chief Minister orders release of water for irrigation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered the release of water from Periyar dam in Theni district and Amaravathy dam in Tiruppur district from Monday onwards to irrigate farmlands in the districts

In a statement issued on Sunday, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said that she had received requests from the farming community to release water from Periyar dam and Amaravathy dam for the purpose of crop cultivation in Theni, Tiruppur and Karur districts. 

Agreeing to their requests, the CM ordered the release of water from the P.T.R Channel and Thanthai Periyar Channel of Periyar dam and Amaravathy dam from Monday, November 30, onwards. 

The water released from Periyar Dam would benefit 5,146 acres of agricultural areas in Theni District, Theni and Uthamapalayam taluks. The release from Amaravathy dam would benefit 54,637 acres of farmland in Tiruppur and Karur’s New and Old Ayakkattu irrigational lands.
