City comes to a standstill on traumatic Tuesday

As Chennai was limping back to normal life after some relief from the rain over the last one week, severe and continuous downpour was witnessed from Monday evening. This led to major chaos on Tuesday as roads caved in, traffic came to a halt and the local train lines were temporarily suspended. Many were stranded in different parts of the city and shared their woes with us

"I was on my way to Guindy when there was a big traffic jam around 5.30 pm near the Madhya Kailash junction on Monday evening, right outside the Kasturibai Nagar station. When I went there to look at what had happened, much to my shock, a huge chunk of the road had caved in and the gorge was about 7 feet deep. About 11 traffic policemen were manning the traffic situation in the relentless rain. Kudos to them! Public wasn’t being allowed to stand near the spot. They were suspecting that a sewage pipe might have broken but they didn’t give any concrete information. We had no idea when it would be fixed and the vehicles could start using the road towards Taramani. With two more such incidents near Koturpuram and LIC Anna Salai on Monday, I wonder which road in the city is safe."

"The last time it rained, situation was such in Korattur that we had to lock our house and shift to another area, that didn’t have such a severe water-logging problem. Only after the water receded, we decided to get back on Monday. But it started raining again now. When it rained last time, the sewage water got mixed with rainwater and entered our house. It destroyed the furniture and other household items. We fear that it will get only worse this time. We will have to move out again."

"I stay in Padi and my work place is near Gemini flyover. It is tough wading through the water, not knowing where the potholes are and the roads also cave in now. I had to observe the vehicle in front of me to avoid the potholes. It took me more than an hour to reach office on Tuesday."
