Tamil literature seems to have gotten a much-needed boost when students from Tamil Nadu recited couplets from the chapters of the Thirukkural at the Parliament auditorium on Thursday. The Thirukkural is one of the most important works of classical Tamil literature. On the occasion, renowned lyricist Kavignar Vairamuthu, said, “The couplets of the Thirukkural resonating in the Indian Parliament building is a matter of great pride for the language and for the people of the state.
Usually, only the empowered can enter this building. But the 133 pupils who recited couplets from the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural, have also empowered themselves with the Athikarams (Chapters) of the Thirukkural. Even though it is written in Tamil, it belongs to every Indian; it is common to the humanity as a whole. As the Thirukkural was recited in the Parliament today, the day is not far, when it will be recited at the United Nations.”
Invoking Thiruvalluvar, the lyricist said, “The same rain which ruins, also helps people to spring back to life.” He went on to thank the leaders, including BJP MP Tarun Vijay for being instrumental in organizing this recital. During a conference in Sri Lanka last month, Tarun Vijay, had spoken about the 133 Tamil students who had won a competition reciting Kurals (couplets from the Thirukkural) which was held in Madurai this year. Tarun, who is on a mission to help spread the message of Thirukkural, across the nation
