Rejuvenation camp for jumbos from Jan 7
It is happy news for jumbos again in the State as the annual vacationcum-rejuvenation camp for temple elephants will begin from Jan 7 at Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district

The annual rejuvenation camp for temple elephants in the state has been scheduled to be conducted from January 7 to 23, will be held for 17 days this year. This year, totally 41 elephants from the state and two from neighbouring union territory of Pudhucherry will attend the camp. The State government has allotted Rs 1.5 crore for the jumbos camp.
The Chief Minister has exempted sick elephants from participating in the camp and those animals resisting to be transported to the camp. Along with the elephants, mahouts, would also be trained on the upkeep of the pachyderms and would be given tips on monitoring the health condition of the animals.
The camps, are usually a big hit among the local crowd with men, women and children making a beeline to the watch the jumbos relaxing in a cool climate on the western ghats belt.
The camp, a brainchild of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, was first held in 2003 and continues to be an annual feature benefiting the animals in captivity. Protein rich food, medical attention and supervision by senior doctors drawn from the various veterinary hospitals in the state are the main highlights of the camp.
The HR and CE department works in close coordination with the Forest Department officials for the successful conduct of the camp. At the first 30-day camp, 55 elephants participated and for the next two years, the camps were held in Mudhumalai.
