The stay order came, after the petitioners including Animal Welfare Board of India and PETA challenged the Centre’s notification on January 7, to conduct jallikattu during Pongal festival.
Dr Ramadoss, the founder leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi and a strong campaigner for jallikattu , said, “State and Central government are responsible for the stay on jallikattu now, as both are not initiating encessary measures to ensure the conduct of the sport.”
Condemning the moves of both governments, Ramadoss said that state government led by AIADMK doesn’t care to conduct jallikattu and never take needy steps for the same. Instead of removing bulls from the list of non-performing animals, central government merely issued a notification to conduct jal likattu , which is known to be vulnerable to get a stay in court, he said.
DMDK leader Vijayakant while blaming the state government for not engaging in legal measures to conduct jallikattu with no disturbances, the leader of opposition party in Tamil Nadu, DMDK founder chief Vijayakanth demanded that the Tamil Nadu and central government to immediately discuss with legal experts to approach Supreme Court and enabling the smooth conducting of jallikattu .
Reacting to the stay on jallikattu notification, DMK treasurer MK Stalin said, “I appeal to the central government to approach it legally and win a favourable verdict for the people of Tamil Nadu.” In his statement, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, in the wake of Supreme Court’s stay on jallikattu notification, requested the state and central governments to take appropriate measures as soon as possible to facilitate the conduct of the sport during the Pongal this year.
