300 new MTC buses to not play in city

Bus commuters can heave a sigh of relief as the MTC has now decided to introduce 300 brand new buses in the city, while phasing out 180 buses that are unfit for service

After being flooded with complaints from commuters, concerning the condition of MTC buses plying across various routes in the city, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation of Chennai has decided to take corrective measures to address the same. 

Officials informed this newspaper that they have identified about 180 buses as unfit and these vehicles are going to be phased out soon. S Murugesan, General Manager (Technical Wing), MTC says “We frequently examine buses, based on the number of years they have been in service and their physical condition. A total of 300 ordinary buses are to be introduced soon. 

These buses will replace 180 unfit buses that are on their way out.”

According to sources in the state body, the MTC operates around 3,700 buses as of now and the buses are amply staffed. More than 50 lakh passengers travel by MTC buses on a daily basis, plying on 196 routes.
