Students of KRM Public School in Perambur will now get a platform to share their ideas through a TED Ed Club. They claim to be the first school in Tamil Nadu to have obtained a licence from TEDx Talks to enable students to hold similarly styled events of their own.

TED Talks, as they are popularly known, are meant to inspire as speakers from different walks of life share their thoughts and experiences. To promote the concept in educational institutions, TED-Ed clubs are being introduced to help students meet regularly to discuss, pursue and present their ideas in short TED-style form.

“We aim to impart education that is relevant to modern times, and communication skills are an important aspect of this. To show students how to speak effectively on stage, we screen TED talks every week. This is followed by brainstorming sessions on a given topic,” says R.J. Bhuvanesh, CEO of the school.

He further explains that the children are given chances to present their own ideas at the club. “We also give them a chance to connect with students from around the world. We recently did a connect video call with Turkey’s Nesibe Aydin Middle School’s TED Ed CLUB.

The children got a chance to exchange their ideas, practices and related interactions. The onehour long session was informative and the kids also learnt about other cultures.”

The school obtained a license from TED Talks after submitting to them their details. “We now have a club with 25 students and are planning to create two separate rooms in which to facilitate its activities,” says Jayagowri, facilitator of the club.

TED Videos are shared across all platforms that bounce off ideas and experiences. Specially meant for young minds, they help students in developing presentation skills while also celebrating and discussing creative ideas by students from around the world. Though there are TED-Ed clubs in many parts of India, we are among the first in the city to get one,” says Bhuvanesh.
