In a case of medical negligence involving the death of a woman and her baby, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the government to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the legal heirs of the deceased.
Taking Suo-moto cognisance of a report that appeared in Daily Thanthi, SHRC member K Baskaran held that the negligence by the medical officer and two maternity assistants violated the human rights.
As per Kalaivani’s mother Lali, Kalaivani was admitted in Perambalur Health Post on April 5, 2008. On April 6, medical officer Dr B Vasanthi failed to visit the health post and attend the delivery. In her absence, maternity assistants Rajalakshmi and P Jayamani themselves performed delivery after administering an injection, which led to Kalaivani’s death.
