IIIT’s ‘App’solute attractions on Republic Day function

In line with the Prime Minister’s appeal, IIIT-DM promotes ‘Make in India’ projects aimed at encouraging faculty members and students to help enable “Startup India” via faculty research and student organisations like the ‘Designers Club.’

The staff at the Teaching Learning Centre and student members of Designers Club conceived many hands-on fun robotic projects, which turned out to be a big attraction for visitors and children at the Republic Day function this year. The projects included a Tricoloured mobile robot operated through a smartphone application, and another controlled by kids through a video game.

“Our students have also developed a remotely operated underwater robotic vehicle that can be used in a tank through Internet. The goal is to promote affordable building of robots by students and their teachers,” Director of the institute Prof R Gnanamoorthy said. 

Prof Pandian, programme coordinator, said that students designed robots using low cost commercial off-the-shelf components like motors, stock materials, micro-controllers and sensors. 

“The idea is to disseminate knowledge of cutting edge disciplines like robotics, electronics, and computers to students through playful learning, and lowcost Do-It-Yourself kits besides Build Your Own projects using projects from among students and faculty,” Prof Pandian explained.
