What lured you towards the idea of ‘handmade’?

In India, handmade is about living history – about forms that have been passed down from one generation to another; and of course, handmade is also work for many hands, about people finding work where they live rather than migrating to the big cities for employment.  Since we had been exposed to handloom since childhood, we decided to give a platform to these ancient art forms and help artisans across the country.

Share your experiences with the artisans of the country.

At the moment, we are connected to about 2000 artisans across UP, Rajasthan, Punjab to Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. These artisans are experts in their fields and love their art. All we need to tell them is what is contemporary and what works in the market.

How has the response been from Chennai?

HOI held its first exhibition in Chennai in 2010 and it was a success. Since then, we have been conducting regular exhibitions. People here love the hand woven apparels and there is always curiosity among Chennaiites on what new art forms we are going to come up with, in every exhibition.
