Greater Chennai Corporation inaugurated

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the “Greater Chennai Corporation” through video conferencing from the secretariat here on Saturday.

The Greater Chennai Corporation comprises 42 local bodies, including nine municipalities, eight town panchayats and 25 village panchayats, located in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. 

The Government issued an order to rename Chennai Corporation as “Greater Chennai Corporation” on October 26, 2015. 

A total of 10 zones, 155 wards spread over a geographical area of 174 square kilometre functioned under the previous Chennai Corporation. With the merger of 42 local bodies from the two neighbouring districts, the area of Greater Chennai Corporation has increased to 426 sqkms. The new urban body would be up to Tiruvottiyur in the north, Ambattur in west and Sholinganallur in the south. 

Besides this, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a host of facilities, including e-seva centres, 31 Amma canteens at a cost of Rs 8.25 crore in 9 regions across Chennai, a bus stand in Korattur built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh and a lorry shed at Manali costing Rs 4.96 crore, additional classrooms for middle schools in Chinna Kodungaiyur, 3 community halls, one each in Mogppari, Thousand lights and Sholinganallur, public toilets in various places across Chennai, Anganwadi centres and parks across the city. 

Municipal administration minister SP Velumani, Social welfare minister B Valarmathi, Handlooms minister S Gokula Indira and other officials were present when the Chief Minister inaugurated the new facilities.
