A chock-a-block traffic on Maduravoyal road

The road gets narrowed down for regular traffic, which is usually heavy with container lorries taking the route to the port. With most of the VIP weddings taking place in the marriage halls in the area, regular commuters’ patience gets tested. Most of the marriage halls lack proper parking facilities. Police patrolling the area too turn a blind-eye to the haphazard parkings, says some motorists.

S Mohanram, president, Consumer Protection Council, Thirunindravur, says “Police must not hesitate to attach the vehicles parked in unauthorized places near arterial roads.” He adds that the heavy rush to the marriage halls almost block the road to the vehicles approaching Poonamallee and Koyambedu. “It is due to the lack of parking facilities for the invitees in the big halls which have come up along the stretch till Vanagaram,” he says.

Another regular commuter A Vijay Ganesh says “I have seen police officials themselves stranded in the melee on the road during function heavy days.”

He adds “It is high time that officials inspect all the marriage halls and check the arrangements provided by the halls for parking visitors’ cars. The officials must insist on the owners to establish parking areas large enough to take the load of the visiting crowd or else don’t lend the halls for big functions.”

But police officials say “Enough traffic police personnel are posted to handle it.” The reality on the ground is so that they too admits “Yes, there is heavy traffic jam during marriage heavy day.”
