The youth, who had suffered more than 70 percent burns, was rescued and taken to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where his condition deteriorated.

A considerably peaceful protest conducted under the aegis of Naam Tamilar Katchi, led by its leader Seeman, suddenly turned violent when Vignesh, leader of the student’s wing of the party in Mannarkudi, poured kerosene on his self and set himself ablaze.

Policemen, who were posted at the spot to prevent any untoward incident, were taken aback at the sudden move of the youth. They then used rucksacks and tree branches to douse the flames engulfing Vignesh.

In the melee, someone brought a can of drinking water and poured it on Vignesh, who by then had fallen to the ground.

Police carried the youth to a police jeep, which was parked in the area, and rushed him to hospital.

A letter, purportedly written by Vignesh, was later shared on social media. In the letter, the youth had asked his fellowmen to continue with the struggle for water from Cauvery and save the farmers of Tamil Nadu.
