Passersby immediately informed the police about the accident in the posh locality. Police said Vikash Anand (22), son of Supreme Court lawyer Vijay Anand was inebriated when they arrived at the accident spot. Vikash Anand and his friend Charan Kumar were returning from a party hosted by a former Indian cricketer on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred around 3.30 am. The deceased auto driver has been identified as Arumugham (30), a native of Tirutani. Police said Vikash was driving the car at a very high speed and when they were opposite a star hotel, he lost control of the vehicle and the car hit the median. Due to the high speed, the car swerved sharply to the left and crashed on to the auto rickshaws parked on the road side. Vikash and his friend did not suffer any injury as the air bag in their car deployed.
Police said the auto drivers used to park their vehicles at this stretch and sleep inside after late night service Arumugham and Bharathan, who were inside the autos that took the first impact were crushed inside. Others escaped with minor injuries.
The injured were first rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Arumugham and Bharathan were subsequently shifted to the Government General Hospital where Arumugham died without responding to treatment. Bharathan’s condition is also said to be highly critical.
