Home Secretary Apoorva Varma on Monday summoned Prisons DIG Kanagaraj to his office at the Secretariat and is reported to have enquired about the ‘developments’. However, until evening no disciplinary action had been taken against the prison officials which is the standard procedure in such a case.

Prison department ADGP, who heads the department is currently travelling and is expected to return only after 10 days. The post of IG prisons has been lying vacant for over a year and hence the DIG was made in charge of the department.

Meanwhile, Ramkumar’s advocates have raised serious doubts over police claims that the prisoner was suffering from a ‘stomach ache’ and therefore had to be taken to the dispensary.

Meanwhile, Ramkumar’s parents have told media that they will not accept his body from the morgue unless a CBI enquiry is ordered to probe his ‘killing’.

Lawyers want parents present

The post-mortem of Ramkumar is expected to be conducted on Tuesday. Talking to DTNext, Dr Narayan Babu, dean, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, said, “The team of doctors from KMC, Dr Selvakumar, professor, forensic science, Dr Manikandaraja, assistant professor, forensic science and Dr KV Vinod, assistant professor, forensic science, were ready. Dr Balasubramanian, professor, forensic medicine, Stanley Hospital, was also present as per court order. Though the lawyers insisted that the parents be present as part of the procedure, they failed to come. The procedure cannot be carried out after 6 pm and it has been postponed by a day.” Ramkumar, who was accused of hacking S Swathi, a software engineer to death at Nungambakkam Railway station on June 24, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday evening.
