Actvists appeal to PCB to defer Neutrino project
A number of activists including those from Poovulagin Nanbargal (Friends of the Earth) on Thursday met the members of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and requested them to defer permission to the proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) project at Pottipuram village in Bodi West hills in Theni district. Poovulagin Nanbargal (PN) member G Sundarrajan said, “The Indian Institute of Mathematical Sciences had filed an application to get ‘consent to establish’ (COE) from the pollution control board, as MDMK leader Vaiko had stayed the project through High Court Madurai bench for IIMS not getting the COE.”
“As the Ecological Impact Assessment (EIA) was defective and as the Salim Ali Centre of Ornithology and Natural History, which undertook the report was not accredited for this exercise, it was incumbent on the board to reject the IIMS application” he added. “Site blasts could affect the Mullaperiyar dam,” he said.
