According to sources, On August 25, employees of a Kerala-based jewellery shop — Mohammed Ibrahim, Musheer and Sidosh — were returning from Chennai with Rs 3.93 crore after reportedly selling jewels. When their car was nearing Eacheneri in Coimbatore, a three-member gang pretending to be police personnel intercepted the car in the mid-night and seized it.
The next day, the jewellery shop owner Anwar Saddaq of Malappuram lodged a complaint with Coimbatore Superintendent of Police Ramya Bharathi and a special team was formed headed by DSP Krishnamurthy to nab the culprits. The team located the car abandoned near Trissur and found a few packs of money spread around the car.
During further inquiry, the police were shocked to find out that those who waylaid the car were real policemen and they were identified as Inspector Muthukumar of K-Paramathi police station in Karur, Sub-Inspector Saravanan and SSI Dharmendran who were all part of a special team to probe the kidnap case of a private dairy farm owner in Karur.
On Tuesday, Coimbatore ADSP Chandramohan who came to Karur, took Inspector Muthukumar to Coimbatore for an inquiry. On hearing the information, the DIG, Tiruchy Range, made an inquiry about the occurrence and issued suspension order to all the three police officers. Meanwhile, a search is on for the SI Saravanan and the SSI Dharmendran who have been absconding.
