EVMs to be used at urban centres: Madurai Collector
Madurai Collector K Veera Raghava Rao on Monday said that the electronic voting Machines will be used only in the urban areas and in the rural areas the ballot box system would be used.

Madurai Corporation with 100 wards will go for the polls in the first phase on October 17 and in the adjoining areas it will be held on October 19, he said.
Melur Municipality, and four Town Panchayats such as A.Vellalapatti, Palamedu and Paravai will vote along with the Corporation on October 17.
Six Panchayat Unions such as Madurai East, Madurai West, Melur, Kottampatti, Vadipatti and Alanganallur will also go to polls on the same date, said the Collector in a press meet.
The second phase of the local body elections on October 19 will be held at Tirumangalam and Usilampatti Municipalities.
Along with it the five town Panchayat such as T.Kallupatti, Peraiyur, Elumalai, Vadipatti and Cholavandhan will be held.
Election for six more Panchayat Unions in the district such as Tiruparakundram, Tirumangalam, T.Kallupatti, Kallikudi, Sedapatti, Usilampatti and Chellampatti will also be conducted on October 19 said the Collector.
He added that out of 3,485 polling booths 1,207 polling booths would be in the Corporation, 121 in three municipalities, 162 in Town Panchayats and 1,995 in rural areas.
Among the total number of booths 481 are identified as sensitive and 11 are identified as hyper sensitive.
In total 1,490 EVMs will be used in the corporation and municipalities where as in panchayats 4,958 ballot boxes will be used.
There are 42 Returning Officers and 601 Assistant Returning Officers to oversee the election process.
Apart from that 153 zonal parties will be in place to monitor and assist the election work for the officials.
