Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, Karunanidhi in a statement said it was painful to hear about the murder and added that violence that followed was ‘condemnable’.

Referring to reports that anti-socials were involved in the incident, he alleged that of late, such incidents were on the rise in Coimbatore. “Hindu Munnani activists had taken law into their hands by threatening people to close shops. This is not in good taste,” the DMK chief opined.

Karunanidhi also condemned incidents of petrol bombs being hurled at BJP offices in Dindigul and Coimbatore. Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan blamed the withdrawal of police security to district spokesperson of Hindu Munnani Sasikumar for his murder.

After visiting the bereaved family along with state party functionaries including Vanathi Srinivasan, he told media persons that the loss could have been prevented had police not withdrawn security to Sasi Kumar.

After giving him protection for the past one year the police withdrew it a fortnight ago, he said. Citing the increasing number of murders in Dindigul and Hosur since 1989, he said terrorism was the reason for them. “We welcome the special task team that has been formed to investigate the murder,” he said and added that the movement is not against any other religion though it is dedicated to the Hindus.
