15 new judges script their way to High Court in Devanagiri
The strength of the judges in the Madras High Court is poised to rise with 15 more judges set to assume charge in the coming days. On Monday, 15 of them, cleared by the Supreme Court and appointed by the Centre, were invited to write their names in Devanagari script, which is a formality before the warrant of appointments are issued.

As per the prevailing procedure, a facsimile of the names will be cut out and affixed in the warrant of appointment to be issued by the Centre with the President’s signature. Following this, they would take oath as judges in the presence of the Chief Justice.
Since the process of writing their names in Devanagari firms up their appointment as judges, jubilation prevailed in the Madras High Court since the clearance, which had been pending for long had finally fructified. Now, the number of judges is poised to rise from the present 39 to 54. But, it is still short of the sanctioned strength of 75 judges. However, nine more names are expected to be cleared in a couple of weeks.
Work is also on in full swing to accommodate the arrival of the 15 judges, with court halls and chambers being readied. Their arrival is also expected to resolve the pendency of the cases, which as on 2015 was over 1.95 lakh cases. Sources also said that the pending appointment of 21 judges is bound to be taken up soon, since the three collegium judges, were more familiar with the Bar members and picking the right person would not be an issue. When it comes picking persons from the judiciary, the aspect of seniority gains credence.
The present list features nine lawyers and six district judges from the subordinate judiciary. The nine lawyers in the list are R Parthiban, R Subramanian, G Govindaraj, M Sundar, R Sureshkumar, MS Ramesh, SM Subramanian, Anitha Sumanth and J Nisha Bhanu. The six persons among the judiciary include the Madras High Court Registrar-General T Ravindran, G Karthikeyan, S Bhasskar. P Velmurugan, CV Karthikeyan and Basheer Ahmed.
