BJP functionary murdered by gang in Villupuram

In the continuing attacks on Hindu outfit functionaries and members, a BJP office bearer was killed in a country bomb attack by a gang in Villupuram on Tuesday. Police said that the victim, Janarthanan, was the youth wing leader of the Villupuram east district BJP unit.

Janarthanan also had several cases, including murder, attempt to murder and kidnap besides kidnap for ransom, against him. Meanwhile, Janarthanan had appeared in a local court in connection with a kidnap for ransom case and was returning on a bike with his supporters. When he was nearing the railway bridge in the town, suddenly a gang hurled petrol bombs on him and his supporters. The gang also hacked Janarthanan all over his body. Janarthanan succumbed to injuries on the spot. Suresh one of his supporters who tried to save Janarthanan was also attacked by the gang. Suresh, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital. 

On information police rushed to the spot and held inquiries. Four special teams have been formed to nab the assailants. The special teams during initial investigations found out that the murder of Janarthanan was the result of the rivalry between two criminal gangs.

It also came to light that during the 1996 local body polls two groups, one under Boopalan and the other under Manikandan contested. Later Boopalan reformed and was leading a normal life.

However, a new gang under a person named Rajkumar emerged and started to work against Manikandan’s gang in which Janarthanan was also a member.
