The deceased was identified as Karuppasamy, an autorickshaw driver from Kovilpatti. On Wednesday morning, Karuppasamy had boarded a TNSTC bus at Kovilpatti intending to go to Coimbatore. While he was travelling in the bus, two passengers boarded the vehicle at Padandhal and started arguing with Karuppasamy and picked up a quarrel with him.
When the wordy quarrel intensified, one of the assailants shot Karuppasamy from close range just below the chest. Karuppasamy died on the spot. Following the shootout, fellow passengers panicked and quickly alighted from the bus which had come to a stop by then.
Virudhunagar Superintendent P Rajarajan visited the spot and carried out investigation. Preliminary police inquiries revealed that two brothers of Karuppasamy, Mandiramoorthy and Kanagaraj, were allegedly involved in the murder of Abdullah (19) in Kovilpatti on July 2. As Mandiramoorthy and Kanagaraj were in prison, the supporters of Abdullah avenged his killing by eliminating Karuppasamy.
