Three die as boiler explodes in TTPS

Three contract labourers died in an accident at Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station (TTPS) as boiler in one of the units had exploded. One more worker had sustained grievous injuries in the accident.

TTPS houses five units with 210 mw of power production each and the total power production stands at 1050 mw. As all the five units are older than 25 years there are frequent breakdowns in the units. The units are also shutdown for annual maintenance for increasing productivity. Similarly, the fifth unit of TTPS was shutdown for annual maintenance and renovation works were going on at the boiler section. Four contract workers, Murugaperumal, Arumugam, Vignesh and Syed Umar, were deployed in the work.

On Sunday evening when they were working there was huge explosion at the boiler and in the impact, all four were thrown away. All four of them sustained grievous injuries and Murugaperumal and Arumugam died on the spot while Vignesh died while getting treated at a private hospital. Syed Umar who had also sustained serious injuries is getting treated at the hospital. Thoothukudi Thermal Nagar police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile the dead bodies were recovered and were sent for postmortem.
