Alleging that several illegal sand quarries were being operated in the Cauvery, members of the movement, led by the Coordinator Mugilan, Pazha Nedumaran and CPI leader C Mahendran went to an illegal quarry at Kadambankurichi around 6 pm. When they reached the middle of the river, a few workers had reportedly pelted stones at them.
On information, the DSPs Kummaraja (Karur Town) and Kalaiarasan (Aravakurichi) along with the police rushed to the spot, rescued Pazha Nedumaran and Mahendran and stopped them from moving ahead. However, Mugilan along with 30 members of the movement and farmers proceeded to the quarry and they were chased away by quarry workers. A complaint has been lodged against the quarry workers with the police. A heavy posse of police has been deployed at the spot as a precautionary measure.
