Drop in Tasmac sales this Deepavali season

Initial reports indicate a dip in the sale of liquor by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) outlets this year during the Deepavali holidays. The outlets raked in an approximate amount of Rs 243 crore this year, according to Tasmac officials. Last year the sales was to the tune of Rs 372 crore.

The officials said that they would compile the sales data and send it to the head office on Monday, after which the exact sales and revenue would be known. The government had closed nearly 500 outlets and reduced the operating time by two hours earlier this year. However, there was a spurt in the sales across the state during Deepavali, the officials said. On Friday and Saturday, the demand for liquor was high and customers brought the brands in large quantity. “Many of them purchased in bulk fearing their choice of brand may not be available during the long festival weekend,” said an outlet manager. A District Manager, seeking anonymity, said that they were given targets for Deepavali sales and however, they could not meet it this time. “I have to answer my higher officials about the sales and I will be questioned, if the sales were low,” he said and added that usually festival season would attract crowds and the sales would go up. But this time it is unlikely to be more and the average sales would be around Rs 250 crore.
