Chaotic intersection at Inner Ring Road troubles motorists
The intersections at the Inner Ring Road are in absolute mess as vehicles move in from all directions. The arterial road that connects GST Road to the Velachery High Road is flanked by residential colonies. The residents use this road to reach their offices and shopping centres on Taramani Link road or to move towards Velachery.

There is no proper regulation of traffic. Motorists tend to take a blind turn at these junctions. Traffic at the junction below the pillars of the MRTS rail lines often comes to a standstill as bikes and cars jostle for space. This is a common scene here throughout the day.
R. Suresh, travels from the Velachery Railway Station to Adambakkam everyday using the Inner Ring Road. He turns right at the intersection to reach his destination and his trouble begins here. Negotiating the traffic itself takes more than 10 minutes. “Here the traffic coming from the GST towards Adambakkam halts to take a turn, apart from that, motorists coming from Puzhuthivakkam too travel through this intersection,” says Suresh, adding, “It all a total mess. Motorists move from both sides and amidst this, there are people taking U-turns.”
Motorists say lack of a traffic signal is the root cause of the chaos. There are two to three similar intersections that are completely irregulated, they complain.
The junction that connects Alandur, Nanganallur with GST is another mess. These junctions need a traffic signal, so that vehicular movement is smooth. Also, traffic police personnel are present at these junctions only during peak hours.
During other times, motorists have to manoeuvre themselves through the confusion. “We want either an automated traffic signal to be installed here or traffic police personnel to be present there throughout the day,” says Vishnu S., a businessman who runs a commercial establishment on the stretch.
Heavy vehicles too are put to hardship at this intersection. “Imagine huge lorries standing for long in a traffic jam. It makes movement of other vehicles difficult. If some regulation can be put in place here, it would very helpful to the public,” says an IT employee who passes through this intersection every day.
Confusion reigns supreme under the newly constructed pillars for MRTS. “The wide pillars obscure a motorist view of vehicles coming from the other side. So many times, I have been taken unaware by a speeding vehicle making a sudden U-turn. Also, many pedestrians cross the roads at these junctions and have to run for their lives when it gets chaotic out there,” says Murugesh R, another motorist.
