Such facilities are functioning at the Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore junctions since last month. Located close to the reservation counter on the first floor, the centre has an enclosure for mothers to breastfeed their babies and space has been earmarked for the women accompanying them to wait outside.

It would be manned by two women staff round the clock. One of them would be a railway employee and they would assist the women to know the arrival and departure of trains. The staff would also be providing assistance in hiring taxi and autorickshaw services.

The other staff will be railway protection force personnel, who would attend to emergency situations and help the women in distress at the junction. Salem Division officials said that they would inaugurate more such centres at other important stations in the division based on the response to the one opened at Coimbatore.
