No cyclone threat to TN now: RMC

The low-pressure area over central Andaman sea and adjoining areas of southeast Bay of Bengal moved towards northwest and lay over southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to move north-westward and concentrate into a depression during the next 12 hours. Subsequently, it is very likely to intensify further while moving north-westward. The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto mid tropospheric level persists, according to Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.   S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, told DTNext , “As the low pressure is intensifying, coastal areas in Tamil Nadu will get heavy to very heavy rains. Further, there is a possibility of Chennai getting intermittent rainfall in the next 24 hours.” 

“Indications are that low-pressure has a chance of converting into a cyclonic storm. We are monitoring it and if it became cyclonic, it will move north-east towards Odisha,” the weatherman said and added that Tamil Nadu would receive less rainfall, if this happened. Another official said the southern and interior parts of the state continued to experience rainfall leading to all water bodies getting good inflow. Chennai on Tuesday received good rainfall. What started as a drizzle in most parts of the areas turned to heavy rain and lasted for a short spell. However, the city and suburbs experienced mild rain early on Wednesday morning. The sky was overcast in the evening.
