At a function, which was to be presided over by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, the elephant was brought to garland and welcome him. However, on a tip off, two inspectors from SPCA, Chandrasekaran and Rajendran arrived at the spot and took away the animal to safety. Speaking to DTNext, Rajendran said that they received information and acted upon it. “Though the organisers claimed that they have a license, we need to verify it” he said.

“Shekar from Tiruchi has the ownership licence for the elephant. However, the elephant was brought from Srirangam and has a metal chip on one of its ears. We need to compare the details on the chip to what was on the licence to understand the whereabouts of the elephant,” he said.

The organisers also need a performing licence if it were to welcome the guests, added the official.
