Truck transporting new currency notes to a bank detained

Election Commission authorities today detained a truck transporting currencies of Rs 2,000 denomination to a public sector bank in the poll-bound Thanjavur.

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said that the truck was transporting the currency notes to a branch of Bank of Baroda.

The vehicle was detained for "technical reasons", he said.

The vehicle carried new currency notes of 2,000 denominations, approximately worth about Rs seven crore.

It is expected that the truck may be released after scrutiny of documents.

Polls to Thanjavur assembly constituency, along with Aravakkurichi, were cancelled at the time of the May 16 elections by the Election Commission following allegations of distribution of money and gifts among the voters by political parties.

The polls would be conducted on November 19.

By poll to Thirupparankundram Assembly constituency, necessitated following the death of AIADMK MLA SM Seenivel, who passed away soon after the declaration of the Assembly poll results, would also be held on November 19.
