It all began at around 3 pm when a few persons who were standing by the parapet of the Pudupet bridge noticed some bits of paper floating in the river towards the Napier Bridge and then the Bay of Bengal. The sight of a crowd peeping down the parapet attracted the attention of motorists and other pedestrians who too stopped to check if currency notes were actually flowing down Cooum. “As word spread, a huge crowd gathered on both walls of the bridge and were looking at nothing but water and sewage trickling down the river bed along with paper, plastic bags and other waste. Most people were not even aware of what they were looking for,” said a policeman who rushed to the spot to chase away the crowd.
After frantically waiting for see demonetized currency notes with the hope of grabbing a few bundles, the crowd dispersed after the police strength increased. Traffic was stalled for about an hour in the Pudupet area due to this hoax.
However, when the object of curiosity landed on the shore, it did not contain any currency.
