After my Class 12, I would like to pursue a career in agriculture. I come from a low-income family. I study with a lot of interest. It all seems easy but find it tough to write during exams. Please advise (M. Manikandan, TVK Nagar, Chennai)

It is heart-warming to read that young mind like you think of agriculture as a career. It is a very important field not only for education but also for research, development and enhancing agricultural products. Today, agriculture does not present a rosy picture in spite of being the backbone of our nation. Our agricultural advancement is a mirage. We have not made much technological progress in the recent past. Agriculture science is compartmentalised yet linked comprehensively. It includes farm management, horticulture, agro marketing and merchandising, manufacturing of machinery, developing farms and financial operations.

It is generally a 4-year undergraduate degree covering agriculture science, new scientific techniques, land surveying, water resource management, soil science, biotechnology basics, animal and poultry management. Physics, Chemistry and Biology background in your Class 12 is compulsory for admission. Without PCB you can only enter short-term diploma courses and such courses can be done even after your Class 10.

Some of the available B.Sc., courses in Agriculture are: Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Microbiology, Agricultural Statistics and Agricultural Entomology. There is also BBA with specialisation in Agricultural Business Management. Similarly, at the level of M.Sc., Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, biotechnology and biochemistry courses are available. Also, related ones at the Masters level are M.E/M.Tech in Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Information Technology. If you are passionate about the profession you can move ahead for PhD and be associated with research. Jobs related to the study are the following: agricultural consultant, plantations or fish farm manager, soil scientist, forest ranger, dairy farming, geneticist, fertiliser manufacturing firms, horticulture, plant pathology, veterinary science, agro-machinery manufacturing industries, agro product marketing companies, food processing units, etc.

You can top up your degree with a certificate course in organic farming. The growing popularity of organic farming needs numerous organic agricultural scientists. I have witnessed how scientifically organic farming is done on a massive scale using modern and tailor-made innovations as part of research and development by Wageningen Agricultural University, in the Netherlands. Your family may be poor, but if you are hardworking and passionate about getting where you want to be, the impediments disappear. If agriculture is your priority, study hard to earn a seat in government quota. You have to prepare for the state level entrance examination. Then you will be shortlisted for counselling as per the merit. It has a fixed fee that is incomparably lower than management quota. Your costs can be easily bankrolled through education loans.

Recheck the technique of your studying. Are you merely reading or methodically studying for exams? Reading and Studying has different patterns. Reading a story is different from studying a chapter. Studying requires rereading, writing down short notes, revising without looking at the book, marking the portions and making mnemonics to guide you.
