3 budding talents from TN win Prez honour on Children’s Day

President Pranab Mukherjee presented awards to children for their outstanding achievements in various fields to mark Children’s Day celebrations on Monday. Three children from Tamil Nadu were among the awardees who received the award.

CR Harshawardhani, a table tennis player from Tamil Nadu who is currently ranked number one in India was presented the award at an event held in New Delhi. Rakshitta Ravi, also hailing from the state, was awarded the medal for her contributions in sports. She won the bronze medal for chess in the Commonwealth Championship held in New Delhi in June, 2016. SA Sivasooryaa was presented the awarded under the innovation category. 

The Union Minster for Women and Child Development, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi was also present on the occasion.  The National Child Awards for Exceptional Achievement recognises children with exceptional abilities in fields such as academics, culture, arts, sports and music. Children in the age group of 5-18 are eligible for the award. The award comprises of one gold medal and 30 silver medals, including a certificate and a cheque for Rs 20,000 to the gold medallist and Rs 10,000 to each for the silver medallists. The awards were also given to individuals and institutions for contributing to child development and welfare. The National Awards for Child Welfare for 2015 were presented to five institutions and three individuals for their contributions for the upliftment of children. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh to each institution and Rs 1 lakh to each individual.
