I am in Class 12. After this, I would like to do my graduation. But my ultimate aim is to become IPS. How can I prepare? I am very interested in achieving my goal and ready to take all the effort. Give me practical, step-by-step guidelines. (Pandian. S)

Indian Police Service remains an ultimate fantasy for a majority of young people. Thanks hugely to the film media that has positively popularised the role of IPS Officers. There is no popular hero who has not worn the uniform in reel life. Without a doubt, it is a dream dressing. But the reality to achieve such a fiat is an arduous journey.

You should be already aware that Union Public Civil Services Examination is a gateway to IPS.

Let us go step by step:

  • Get into any degree of your liking. You should enjoy studying the subject.
  • Procure a UPSC Application Form (Online is also available) and send the filled-in form to the UPSC Secretariat.
  • Follow up the notification for the syllabus and relevant details regarding the rules that would be published in some leading newspapers of the country.
  • Prepare for the ‘Preliminary Exams’ (Prelims) that consist of two papers.
  • Paper – 1 is General Studies. The paper is crucial as it is considered for ranking for the mains.
  • Paper – 2 is Aptitude test (the optional subject can be chosen from scores of subjects that would definitely fall within the major of your graduation).

The candidates who are qualified appear for the final exam (Mains). It has five papers. There are two compulsory and optional papers each with comprehensive essay type questions. Once you are through mains, you reach the final stage of the interview. It tests your mental personality trait and mental ability. The successful candidates’ list of around 300 is prepared out of 300,000 applicants.

If you are one among the meritorious hundred, you are sent to Sardar Vallababhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad for rigorous one-year training in physical fitness, Indian Penal Codes, Criminology and social structures.

The physical requirements are paramount. Height, Chest and Eyesight are taken for the test. There is fixed height and chest measurements for male and female. At the time of joining you should have attained 21 years of age and not above 30 years. It has been relaxed by a few years in the case of OBC and SC/ST candidates and defence personnel. Once the training is complete, the officers are sent to their respective state cadres for probation as Assistant Superintendent of Police rank.

If you think UPSC is not meant for you, it is also possible to become an IPS officer through the state PSC exam. Once you clear State PSC exam, you are appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police and it takes 8 – 10 years to become Superintendent of Police. It is a long wait.

IPS is one of the highly respected fields of career and directly in service of the society. If you romance to add that feather in your cap, you have to toil right from the time you join the college. Not merely mugging up your syllabus but developing self-discipline, self-confidence and total commitment.

The profession is ever demanding on your agility, adaptability and good team spirit right from the start until you extend your hands for a golden handshake.
