VCK rejects speculations on alliance with DMK
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) that has been showing proximity with the DMK in recent times by participating in several events and protests, including the Cauvery issue and the anti-demonetisation stir, organised by the Dravidian giant has clearly denied that it was planning to switch sides from the PWF to the DMK combine for the upcoming civic elections.

Rejecting any move to sail towards DMK, Thol Thirumavalavan, told DTNext that alliances should not be formed for mere electoral success and that there should be some deeper ideological match. “The PWF was formed with a common agenda, which was agreed to by all partners. It will not be right to walk out of the front merely for the sake of winning the local body polls,” he said. Political analysts feel that it would be premature to predict that the VCK would quit PWF and join any alliance. Aazhi Senthilnathan, a political critic, said the PWF was completely routed in the May 2016 assembly elections and even the DMDK, which remained a major political party in the alliance, had to bite the dust. “As far as PWF is concerned, at present the VCK remains as prominent member. In such a condition, we cannot predict the fate of the alliance unless there is big electoral activity like the assembly or general elections,” he said and added that expressing solidarity with a party over common issues cannot be seen as an indication of switching sides. Meanwhile, some second line party functionaries said the VCK had already been in DMK alliance in some of the past elections. “Even after PWF was formed, the party put up a significant performance in several key pockets proving that it still had the support of the people. Thirumavalavan, who is also aware of this, will make the right decision at the right time,” the functionary exuded confidence.
