The Congress party has restricted the tributes to its own leaders and very few exemptions were shown to other personalities like Periyar Ramasamy, who was once with the Congress. But, the same gesture was not extended to Annadurai and MGR. In a first, present TNCC chief Thirunavukkarasar breached the tradition by paying tributes to MGR on his death anniversary on Saturday. Even Congress and DMK who were in an alliance were not known to share such a tradition.
However,Thirunavukkarasar was not accompanied by his party colleagues. It seemed that he paid tributes to his political mentor as was his wont while he was a BJP member. Commenting on it, former TNCC chief EVKS Elangovan said, “Thirunavukkarasar was with MGR in the past. He might have gone out of affection for the leader. It has nothing to do with the party.”
