The mother, Chandra (55) died after disembarking from the moving train to recover her handbag which she had left on a bench on the platform. On seeing her mother fall, Ambika (30) too jumped out of the train and suffered grievous injuries. She later died in the hospital without responding to treatment. Chandra, a resident of Otteri, visited her daughter Ambika who resided at Moovarasampet in Madipakkam on Sunday. Ambika resided with her husband Adikesavan, who works in a private firm and the couple have a seven-year-old child.  Ambika was unwell and Chandra decided to take her to a doctor for a check-up on Monday morning.

The two boarded an EMU at Palavanthangal Railway Station heading towards Beach Station at 7.30 am. After entering the train, Chandra realised that she had left her handbag on the bench on the platform. “Chandra jumped out of the train and fell after losing her balance. The daughter followed and jumped out from the moving train,” a railway police official said.

“The two fell on the platform and suffered head injuries. The train was immediately stopped and both were taken to Guindy station. A 108 ambulance arrived at the station to provide medical attention to the duo. However, Chandra was declared dead while Ambika was rushed to Government Royapettah Hospital and later referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where she died,” said a Railway police official adding that the bag contained around Rs 9,000.

According to the railway police, there are six emergency chains in each compartment which passengers can use to stop the train and there are a few control rooms and helpline numbers that they can contact to help stop the train or for any other assistance. But passengers take entraining and detraining lightly, the sources said.
