On January 9 night, Angammal (54) and Srinivasan (28) from Pudhu Gummudipoondi near Gummudipoondi in Tiruvallur District succumbed to the infection at the hospital, where they were admitted the same day. On Tuesday, Ramesh (20) died at the government hospital early in the morning. Talking to DTNext, Dr K Kolandaisamy, Director, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, ruled out water or vector-borne diseases, adding that it seemed more like viral pneumonia.

“The infection was spotted among a few children, when a village health nurse conducted a medical check-up,” he said. Out of the 46 living in isolated and poor condition in the village, 20 were diagnosed with infection.
