Section 144 withdrawn at Marina

Commissioner of Police S George on Saturday rescinded the prohibitory orders clamped on Marina under Sec 144 of CrPc following pro-jallikattu protests.

Police said, instead a regulatory order under Sec 41 of the Chennai City Police Act was presently in force to regulate assemblies, processions, fasts and demonstrations, which would not be permitted on the Marina beach stretch from Napier Bridge to Light House.

In the interest of preservation of peace and tranquility and to curtail the nefarious design of anti-socials and anti-nationals attempting to disrupt public peace and order, Prohibitory Orders under Sec 144 of Criminal Procedure Code was promulgated in Marina from January 29 to February 12 following protests by lakhs of students an youths from January 17 to 23 demanding lifting of ban on jallikattu. 

“The present assessment indicates that a situation which warranted the promulgation of an order under Sec 144 of CrPc does not exist,” the sources said. “Hence the prohibitory orders under Sec 144 promulgated in Marina has been rescinded,” the sources said, adding, regulatory orders under Sec 41 of Chennai City Police Act was enforced.
