Repair work on Chennai bypass in a month, says NHAI
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued an order to undertake repair work on the Tambaram-Red Hills stretch of 32-km long Chennai bypass.

Officials said they would add a new layer of tarmac on the stretch besides carrying out the repair work. Spadework will commence in a month, they added. Sources said, the NHAI officials had been receiving a series of complaints that the stretch was unfit for motoring as there were large number of potholes in most of the sections.
The NHAI had planned to take up the work about a year ago, but subsequently abandoned it. However, as things turned from bad to worse, the officials swung into action and undertook inspection two months ago.
“The bypass road, which connects several important areas en route and the GST with GNT, also plays a key role in reducing traffic congestion inside the city. As the order has been issued from Delhi, we will carry out the repair in a month. After completion of the work, we will add a fresh layer of tarmac,” a senior NHAI official, on condition of anonymity, told DTNext.
The NHAI had already submitted reports to the Union Road Transport Department after inspection and had also floated tender, said another official. When asked about the cost of the work, he said “The entire blueprint is with the union ministry.”
Meanwhile, motorists and civic body officials have urged the NHAI to speed up the works. “It is a fact that the Chennai bypass is an important road. But in the recent past, the stretch has become bumpy.
A lot of potholes have appeared leading to minor accidents,” said A Saravanan, a private firm employee, who takes the bypass to reach the city quickly. The civic officials have been urging the NHAI to repair the faulty street lamps.
NHAI wants civic body to officials to remove garbage
The NHAI officials have complained to the respective civic body officials to prevent dumping of garbage along the bypass. “A number of complaints regarding dumping of garbage along the stretch have come to our notice. Though it is difficult to watch this menace round the clock, the ball is in the court of the civic body officials. We have contacted the respective municipalities and town panchayats in this regard,” said a senior NHAI official.
